Tony Gargano Obituary

Tony Gargano, age 96, of Tucson, Arizona passed away on May 22, 2021 after a brief illness. Tony was a proud WWII veteran who fought in the European theater and served time in a German prisoner-of-war camp. Born in Chicago, he was one of 11 children of Italian immigrants, Rose and Salvatore. He spent most of his life working as a carpenter at the University of Illinois-Chicago campus and loved to fix, build and create. He loved to work on his own building projects and helping everyone with theirs. In his later years, he enjoyed his retirement in Southern California. He eventually moved to Tucson to be closer to his daughter and her family.

He is survived by his daughters, Gina Chorover, Laura Gargano and Patricia Gargano, his son-in-law, Jon Chorover, his grandchildren, Talia Chorover and Nate Chorover, his sister, Elizabeth Savoia, and many nieces and nephews.  He is pre-deceased by his ex-wife, Dorothy, longtime companion, Norma Cardillo, and siblings, Carmen, Vincent, Louie, Jerry, Salvatore, Susan (DiGioia), Anna (Welford), Albert, and Rose (Vorreyere) and many close friends. He loved and was loved by many dogs including Brandy, Ace and Sammy.

Family and friends were the most important thing to him as was a job well done. All who knew Tony were blessed by his eternal optimism, sense of joy, and desire to help others. He will be greatly missed by many. Donations may be made to the Hull House which played an important role in Tony’s life and the life of the Italian community in Chicago (https://janeaddamshullhouse.org/donate/).
