Hattie Brown Obituary

Hattie B. Brown was born to the late Kit Benson and Emma Lee Benson in Water Valley, Mississippi on August 11, 1943.  She attended Davidson High School, where she graduated in 1962.  After high school, Hattie moved to Chicago, Illinois where she married and had her daughters Charon D. Murphy and Sheila R. Brown.

Hattie became a member of the No. 2 New Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church where she joined under the leadership of the late Reverend Elijah Sercy in 1973.  She was a dedicated member of the usher board for more than 30 years and was friends with fellow ushers until the very end.  At the time of her transition, Hattie was proud to be under the leadership of Reverend Terry Moore Sr. and Lady Ellyn Moore.

Hattie was known for her long-time commitments.  Besides her church commitments, she worked for Reflector Hardware Company in Melrose Park, Illinois for just over 30 years. Hattie also enjoyed her home in Oak Park for almost 30 years where she built many strong friendships.

Hattie departed this earthly life on Sunday, April 6, 2025.  She was preceded in death by her siblings Willie B. Benson, Earnest Benson Sr., James Benson, Emma Lee Benson, and Ora Mae Green. She leaves to cherish her memories her two daughters Charon and Sheila, her “adopted” children Felisa Winters, Calvin Green, and Diane Green (the children of her late sister Ora Mae Green and cousin Elizabeth Winters), her brother Arther Lee Benson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
