Gary Kasanders, beloved husband of Linda Kasanders for a magical 35 years. Devoted father of Erin, Christopher, Meghan, and Steven, who were always proud to call him, “Dad”. Loving son of Eugene and the late Lorraine Kasanders. Dear son-in-law of Marge and the late George Nelson. Respected brother of Tom (Dianna) Kasanders and Paul (MaryJoe) Kasanders. Cherished uncle of twelve, loyal friend to so many, and adored dad to six loyal canines: Whiskey, Kodiak, Dylan, Tucker, Penny, and Eloise.
Gary dedicated his professional life to the Westchester Park District, where he retired as Executive Director of Parks and Recreation after 45 years. He was an admired boss that embraced his staff as family and held the respect of the elected commissioners, who honored his legacy with the naming of the Gary A. Kasanders Community Center. Gary made a long-lasting imprint on the village of Westchester through the founding of the Westchester Fun Fest, the Westchester Veterans Day Run, the 16” Softball Tournament of Champions, and most dear to his heart, bringing the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall to Westchester.
Gary was a devout guitarist in the Strings of Faith, a musical brotherhood from Mary Mother of Divine Grace Parish/Divine Infant Church. Worshiping God through music with these special friends in faith brought him great joy.
Gary was a proud member of the Chicago 16” Softball Hall of Fame, where he was regarded as a great player, organizer, and man. He had a great love and respect of nature and enjoyed countless fishing trips up north with his most treasured childhood friends and his two loving sons. Gary, who learned his love of cooking from his mom, shared many delicious meals (and apricot kolackys!) with his loved ones. Above all, Gary enjoyed his time with his children: coaching their teams, attending their concerts, playing with them always and teasing them relentlessly!
