Annie Taylor Obituary

Annie Bertha Taylor, age 81, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2024, at Oakbrook Care. She was born January 3, 1943, in Covington, Tennessee, to her father, Future, and mother, Floyd "Teddy" (Malone) Dowell. She married longtime family friend and love Mathew Taylor Jr. in February 1959, who preceded her in death in 2016.

Her mother and siblings migrated to the Bronzeville community in Chicago when Annie was 7. Friendly and caring, she made many friends in her new city. After graduating from Crane High School on the west side of Chicago, Annie Bertha later attended Malcolm X College. A hardworking wife and mother, she worked at several department stores, then finally secured a career at the United States Postal Service, where she retired after 30+ years of service. With strong faith, Annie actively served at Greater Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church with her husband and children. Annie dedicated over 30 years in various ministries. Many years later, she and Mathew moved to Mars Hill Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as a deaconess. When her health declined, her son-in-law and daughter were on call to ensure the Zoom video was up and running because she treasured the online Monday night Bible study with ladies from Mars Hill.

Annie married Mathew for 57 years, and three girls were born from that union. To these girls, she instilled the importance of education, hard work, and serving others. Besides being a superb cook, organizing group activities for family and friends was one of her passions. She was a seamstress, had the gift of gab, and shared her nuggets of wisdom with everyone who would listen. Everyone knew her for her quick wit, fierce determination, and generosity.

Her parents, Floyd "Teddy" (Malone) Dowell Overall, Future Dowell; spouse, Mathew Taylor; siblings, Charles Dowell, Walter Dowell, Kathryn Gatewood, and George Overall, all preceded her in death.

Surviving loved ones include daughters Valarie Lopez (Charisse K. Hodges), Stephanie (Kirk) Pegues, and Tanya Foutch; siblings Willie Dowell and Shirley Morris; four grandchildren, Tatiana Hauk, Malika Foutch, Matthew Foutch, and Abigail Foutch; and three great-grandchildren, Brandon, Ayanna, and William Hauk along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family will hold a private memorial service in the spring.

"And we know that all things work together for the good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28
